On Sunday, February 16, 2025, a dedicated team of five volunteers from Speakers for Africa will depart from Evergreen, Colorado, for a seven-week mission in Uganda. This team consists of:

  • Peyton Thomas (Executive Director, Speakers for Africa)

  • Penny Randell (Administrator, Speakers for Africa)

  • Megan and Gus Mitchell (Owner and head chef of Cactus Jack's Saloon and Grill, Evergreen, CO)

  • Donna Reardon (Dedicated volunteer)

Our Mission: Impact, Innovation, and Listening - Speakers for Africa Embarks on a Seven-Week Mission to Uganda.

During our time in Uganda, we will be working on several key initiatives aimed at improving education, sanitation, and community development.

Completing the Pit Latrine Project

We will travel to Rwakobo Primary School, outside of Mbarara, to complete our first pit latrine project, ensuring that students have access to safe and sanitary facilities. Alongside this, we will deliver school supplies and athletic gear to support students' education and extracurricular activities.

Expanding Our Reach: NGO Registration & Partnerships

Speakers for Africa is already a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the U.S., but our Ugandan NGO license is still pending. While in Uganda, we will work to secure our official international registration, enabling us to expand our impact. Speakers for Africa Embarks on a Seven-Week Mission to Uganda.

Additionally, we will meet with students from Makerere University and Victoria University in Kampala to scout for young, innovative minds to join our team. Their knowledge and insights will be invaluable in shaping our future projects.

Exploring Sustainable Solutions

A major focus of this trip is researching sustainable waste management and better farming practices. If traditional waste treatment options, such as pumping and processing, are not feasible, we need innovative solutions that align with local needs. We will be using the land of one of our board members to explore practical methods for waste management and agriculture.

Building Key Relationships

We are honored to have scheduled meetings with two kings—the King of Bunyoro and the King of Butoro—as well as the Lord Mayor of Hoima City and other high-level government officials. These relationships will be crucial in guiding our initiatives and ensuring they align with national and local priorities.

Providing Essential Supplies

During our trip, we will be distributing sanitary pads to teenage girls, an essential step in ensuring that young women can attend school without disruption. We will also deliver a projector and additional school supplies to enhance classroom learning for both students and teachers.

Scouting for a Future Community Center

One of our long-term goals is to establish a community center, providing a hub for education, training, and support services. While in Uganda, we will be scouting for the ideal location to bring this vision to life.

Listening First, Then Acting

Above all, our mission in Uganda is to listen, learn, and assess. Innovation is powerful, but it must be balanced with local wisdom and sustainable practices. By conducting proper research and listening to the community, we aim to ensure that our next steps align with best practices and real needs.
