A reliable school kitchen is essential to student success. The kitchen renovation at Uganda Youth Aid School addresses decades-old structural problems that previously exposed children and staff to smoke inhalation, unsanitary conditions, and food insecurity. By strengthening the building, improving ventilation, and creating a safe cooking layout, the project secures long-term nutritional support for the school. < Back 50 Desks Constructed at the Uganda Youth Aid Nursery and Primary school, Kampala, Uganda In March 2025, Speakers for Africa expanded its classroom desk initiative by constructing 50 high-capacity desks—beginning with an initial 22 and completing an additional 28. Each desk seats five students, meaning 250 children were lifted off the floor and given a proper place to learn. The floor is no place to learn; a desk restores dignity, focus, and the basic conditions every child deserves in a classroom. The Speakers for Africa desk program addresses a critical but often overlooked challenge in Ugandan schools: students forced to sit and write on dirt floors. In March 2025 , we built 50 durable desks , each seating five students, providing 250 children with their first dedicated workspace. This single improvement transformed classroom environments—reducing distractions, improving hygiene, and enabling teachers to deliver lessons effectively. The long-term benefits reach far beyond the desks themselves: Students seated at proper desks learn better, write more comfortably, and remain more engaged Classrooms become organized spaces where teachers can provide structured instruction Improved learning conditions help increase school attendance and retention, especially for girls Local carpenters and suppliers benefit economically from the production and installation process The program establishes a scalable model for future classroom infrastructure improvements A desk may be simple, but its impact is profound. YOUTH ATHLETICS Building confidence, dignity and leadership for young boys and girls in Uganda Why Athletics Matters to Our Vision Athletics strengthens every part of our educational mission. When students feel confident and valued, they show up differently in the classroom. They believe in themselves. They participate. They try harder. Sports teach children: Discipline and responsibility Teamwork and communication Leadership and respect Emotional regulation and resilience Goal setting and perseverance Self-worth and identity These lessons directly support learning. A child who feels proud walks taller. A child who feels capable learns faster. Athletics builds the emotional foundation that education depends on. LACK OF ORGANIZED SPORTS TEAMS AND EQUIPMENT Without access to sports programs, uniforms, or equipment, students miss valuable opportunities for teamwork, leadership development, and school engagement. New soccer equipment and jerseys helped form organized teams, building teamwork, leadership, and school pride. Equal participation for girls also strengthened confidence and promoted gender equality. BOYS AND GIRLS SPORTS TEAMS Meet the players Gender Equality Equality in athletics is about dignity and opportunity. When girls and boys receive the same jerseys, coaching, and support, they are being shown that their worth is equal. For girls, a jersey represents confidence, strength, and the right to be seen. For boys, it teaches respect and shared leadership. Together, they learn that equality is not a concept—it is something lived, practiced, and carried into their future. Teams We Have Started Together, our four teams represent far more than sports programs. They represent access, dignity, and possibility. From boys and girls in Mbuya finally wearing jerseys and competing against other schools, to students in Rwakobo discovering teamwork and confidence through soccer and volleyball, each team is a doorway to identity and pride. These teams give children something they have never had before: the chance to belong, to be seen, and to believe in their own potential. Through athletics, they learn that they matter, their school matters, and their future is worth fighting for. Before 2024, they had never worn jerseys and were not allowed to compete against other schools because uniforms were required. Their talent existed, but opportunity did not. Today, they step onto the field with pride, identity, and confidence. Wearing their own jerseys gives them dignity and belonging, and for the first time, they are recognized as true athletes representing their school and their community. Get Involved Jerseys and footballs are just a start. Now we need to equip them with proper shoes and shin guards. Someday, the Uganda Youth Aid and the Lang Institute's Football Club will be known. Many students of this school are orphans or come from families that cannot even afford their tuition. Speakers for Africa’s School Desk Program provides safe, durable desks for Ugandan students, improving classrooms and creating better learning opportunities. From the classroom floor to a dignified desk: we built 50 desks, each supporting four students—giving 200 children the chance to learn in comfort and with pride. With the generous support of Dr. Chad Johnston and Amy Franklin of Summit Executive Cleaning, we built 50 desks—each seating four children, giving 200 students a proper place to learn. Our team spent hours at the mill carefully selecting the best lumber to ensure the desks would be sturdy and long-lasting. What may seem simple—a seat and a writing surface—has transformed the daily learning experience, giving children comfort, dignity, and a renewed sense of pride in their education. Teamwork At Speakers for Africa, teamwork is at the heart of everything we do. Our dedicated staff collaborates closely to plan, implement, and monitor each project, ensuring that every step is guided by accountability and transparency.
