Empowering Vulnerable Youth in Uganda: Our Journey with Speakers for Africa

Updated: Oct 21, 2025

Where We Are Now

Speakers for Africa, Inc. is a fully registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Colorado, actively working in Uganda. Over the past five years, we have made significant strides in improving the lives of vulnerable youth. Here’s what we’ve accomplished:

  • Rebuilt classrooms at Uganda Youth Aid Nursery and Primary School in Kampala.

  • Provided desks, tablets, and supplies for vulnerable students, including many orphans.

  • Launched boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, complete with jerseys, equipment, and coaches.

  • Delivered food programs and hygiene support, including female sanitary products.

  • Completed a pit latrine project at Rwakobo Primary School in partnership with Hon. Wilson Kajwenje, local leaders, and the Ugandan government.

Every one of these projects was made possible through community donations, volunteer time, and incredible partnerships. However, our organization currently operates entirely on volunteer leadership. We have no staff salaries, no dedicated office in Uganda, and no transportation for our team. This situation limits both our efficiency and safety.

The Gap: What $50,000 in Capacity Building Can Do

To transition from a small grassroots nonprofit to a sustainable, high-impact organization, we need $50,000 dedicated to organizational capacity building. Here’s how this funding would transform our operations:

  • A vehicle for fieldwork – Essential for safety and mobility when visiting rural schools and projects.

  • Salaries for staff – Right now, everyone is a volunteer. Funding would allow us to hire local staff in Uganda and part-time administrative support in the U.S.

  • A modest office space in Uganda – A central location for operations, training, and project planning.

  • Improved systems and equipment – From communications to monitoring and evaluation, ensuring accountability and transparency.

With this investment, our projects will scale faster, reach more schools, and ensure long-term stability.

Our Roadmap: 3-Year Goals

Year 1–2 (2025–2026)

  • Build four additional pit latrines in schools where children currently lack safe sanitation.

  • Rehabilitate the kitchen at Uganda Youth Aid Primary School, ensuring proper meals for hundreds of students.

  • Expand our educational support programs, providing books, supplies, and mentorship.

Year 3 (2027)

  • Develop a sustainable agricultural program to support school lunches.

  • Establish a formal partnership network of schools in Uganda, supporting at least 10 institutions.

  • Build an Academy of Dance & Sports Exchange, strengthening cultural ties and promoting equality through the arts.

New Project Ideas

Beyond sanitation and classroom support, we are preparing for several exciting initiatives:

  • Community health outreach in partnership with local leaders.

  • Scholarships for vulnerable students.

  • Water security projects, protecting water tables while expanding access to clean water.

  • Technology programs connecting students in Uganda with supporters and classrooms abroad.
