2026 Mid-Year Impact at a Glance When our supporters gathered at A Night to Empower on March 7, 2026, at Bistro Del Lago in Evergreen, Colorado, they invested in more than a fundraiser. They invested in children. That evening, Speakers for Africa made a promise: every dollar entrusted to our organization would be transformed into meaningful improvements for children in Uganda through clean water, sanitation, school infrastructure, and education. Today, we are proud to say we have fulfilled that promise—and accomplished even more than we anticipated. During the first half of 2026, the generosity of those who believed in us helped us improve two partner schools, provide reliable access to clean water, restore sanitation facilities, deliver educational resources, and create healthier learning environments for hundreds of students. Every project in this report exists because people believed that every child deserves the opportunity to learn. Our mission extends beyond providing books and school supplies. We focus on removing the barriers that prevent children from receiving an education in the first place. Every project begins with one simple question: What is preventing children from learning? When we discovered that students were spending their mornings collecting water instead of attending class, and that some children had no choice but to use nearby bushes as school bathrooms, we realized these weren't simply infrastructure problems—they were barriers to education. At Speakers for Africa, we believe education begins long before a child opens a textbook. It begins with clean water, safe sanitation, and healthy learning environments. By removing these barriers first, we create the foundation that allows children to attend school, stay healthy, and thrive in the classroom. N'Shaara Parents' Primary School In March 2026, our team returned to N'Shaara Parents' Primary School in Rwakobo to build upon the sanitation project we completed the previous year. Rather than considering a project finished once construction ends, we believe lasting change requires long-term partnership. During our visit we expanded the boys' urinal, performed annual maintenance on the four-stance pit latrine, restored WASH handwashing stations, distributed sanitation supplies, and evaluated the project to ensure it continues serving students effectively. Before this project, many students had no choice but to use nearby bushes because the school lacked adequate restroom facilities. Today, the school has experienced approximately a 30% increase in attendance, demonstrating how safe sanitation directly improves educational outcomes. For us, sanitation is about far more than construction—it is about restoring dignity, protecting health, and helping children stay in school. Delivering Clean Water to Exodus Nursery & Primary School In April 2026, our team installed a complete rainwater harvesting system, new gutters and downspouts, completed roof repairs, and connected a new 2,000-liter water storage tank. Today, rainwater is collected directly from the school's roof, providing reliable access to clean water and allowing students to spend more time learning instead of collecting water. While working at Exodus, we also discovered that the school's septic system had failed and was overflowing. We repaired the septic system, renovated the boys' and girls' restrooms, installed improved sanitation fixtures, and restored safe, dignified facilities for students and staff. To ensure these improvements create lasting impact, we also installed handwashing stations, distributed soap, provided Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) education, supplied female hygiene products, and delivered scholastic materials to support classroom learning. Education Begins Before the Classroom Many people believe education begins when a child opens a textbook. We believe it begins much earlier. Education begins when children have access to clean drinking water. It begins when they have safe and dignified sanitation facilities. It begins when preventable illness no longer keeps them home from school. It begins when teachers can start class on time instead of waiting for students to collect water. It begins when classrooms remain dry during the rainy season. These are not separate issues from education—they are the foundation upon which education depends. That belief guides every project we undertake. Before we invest in classrooms, we work to remove the barriers that prevent children from learning in the first place. By improving water, sanitation, hygiene, and school infrastructure, we create the conditions that allow students to learn, teachers to teach, and communities to thrive. Accountability to Our Donors Every dollar entrusted to Speakers for Africa carries a responsibility. Our donors deserve transparency. They deserve measurable results. Most importantly, they deserve to see the impact of their generosity. That is why we document every project through photographs, progress updates, and impact reports like this one. We believe accountability builds trust, and when we make a promise, we believe we should be able to demonstrate exactly how it was fulfilled. The projects highlighted in this report represent more than completed construction—they represent healthier schools, stronger communities, and brighter futures made possible by people who chose to invest in children they may never meet. Our Next Goal: Restoring the Exodus School Roof Currently, we have started a new project. Our current priority is restoring the roof shared by Exodus Nursery & Primary School and Bible Proof International Church. Like many schools in Uganda, the school and church share one building and serve the same community. During the week, the building is filled with students learning. On Sundays, it becomes a place of worship and a gathering place for local families. Years of heavy rain have damaged the roof, allowing water to enter classrooms and interrupt learning. Restoring the roof will protect students, preserve an important community resource, and ensure children can continue learning in a safe, dry environment. This project is the next step in our mission to remove barriers to education, and with your support, we look forward to completing it before the next rainy season. Looking Ahead The work highlighted in this report is only the beginning. As Speakers for Africa continues to grow, we remain committed to expanding access to clean water, improving sanitation, strengthening school infrastructure, and providing educational resources where they are needed most. While those efforts are important, creating lasting change for vulnerable students requires much more than occasional assistance. It requires long-term commitment, community partnerships, legal compliance, accountability, and a willingness to tackle difficult challenges that often go unseen. At Speakers for Africa, we have learned that meaningful nonprofit work is both incredibly rewarding and undeniably tough. Since 2020, our organization has worked alongside schools, community leaders, government officials, teachers, parents, and students in Uganda to improve educational opportunities and living conditions for vulnerable children. Our mission extends beyond simply providing aid. We focus on building sustainable solutions that improve health, education, dignity, and opportunity for students who face significant challenges every day. Rewarding, but Tough Work: Supporting Vulnerable Students in Uganda Through Sustainable Community Development Uganda is one of the youngest countries in the world, with more than half of its population under the age of 18. While the country has made significant progress in education, many schools still struggle with inadequate infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, poor sanitation facilities, limited access to clean water, and insufficient learning resources. Many of the students we serve are orphans or come from families facing severe economic hardship. Despite these obstacles, they consistently demonstrate resilience, determination, and optimism. Our role is not to replace local leadership. Instead, we work alongside communities to identify needs, support local solutions, and help create environments where students can thrive. Feeding Hungry Students One of the most fundamental barriers to learning is hunger. A child who is hungry cannot focus on mathematics, reading, science, or critical thinking. Over the years, Speakers for Africa has helped provide more than 12,500 meals to students attending vulnerable schools in Uganda. School feeding programs serve several important purposes: Improve concentration and academic performance Increase school attendance Reduce absenteeism Support student health and development Encourage parents to keep children in school Food security remains one of the most effective educational investments any organization can make. Supporting Student Athletes Education extends beyond the classroom. Through our boys' and girls' athletic programs, Speakers for Africa has helped establish soccer teams, provide uniforms, purchase equipment, and support coaching opportunities for young athletes. These programs teach: Leadership Teamwork Discipline Confidence Personal responsibility To date, we have supported dozens of student athletes who otherwise would not have access to organized sports opportunities. Athletics also create positive community engagement while helping students develop skills that benefit them throughout life. Building Desks and Improving Learning Environments Imagine attending school while sitting on a dirt floor every day. For many students in Uganda, adequate classroom furniture remains a challenge. Speakers for Africa has worked with local partners to provide desks that allow students to learn in a more comfortable and productive environment. Access to desks may seem simple, but the impact is significant: Better classroom organization Improved student focus Greater comfort during lessons Increased classroom capacity Enhanced dignity and professionalism Educational success often begins with basic infrastructure. Female Empowerment and Hygiene Initiatives Many girls in Uganda miss school because they lack access to proper hygiene products. Through community partnerships, Speakers for Africa has helped provide sanitary supplies and support educational programs focused on hygiene and health. Keeping girls in school benefits entire communities by: Improving graduation rates Increasing future economic opportunities Reducing educational disparities Strengthening community development Supporting female students is one of the most effective investments in long-term social progress. Addressing One of the Greatest Challenges: Sanitation Sanitation is often overlooked by donors because it is not as visible as classrooms, books, or uniforms. However, safe sanitation is one of the most important factors affecting student health and educational outcomes. Without proper sanitation facilities, students face: Increased disease transmission Reduced attendance Safety concerns Environmental contamination Loss of dignity For young students, particularly girls, adequate sanitation can determine whether they remain in school. Exodus School Pit Latrine Project One of our most recent accomplishments was the completion and handover of a new pit latrine at Exodus School in Kampala, Uganda. The project was developed in partnership with local school leadership and community stakeholders to address critical sanitation needs affecting students and staff. The impact includes: Improved sanitation access Better hygiene conditions Reduced health risks Increased student dignity A safer learning environment The handover ceremony became a celebration of community achievement, highlighted by joyful student performances, dancing, and appreciation for everyone who contributed to the project. N'Shaara Parents Primary School Pit Latrine Project Speakers for Africa also recently supported the construction of a pit latrine at N'Shaara Parents Primary School. Like many schools throughout Uganda, N'Shaara faced sanitation challenges that directly impacted students and staff. The new facility provides: Safer restroom access Better hygiene conditions Reduced environmental contamination Long-term infrastructure improvements Increased community confidence in the school These projects demonstrate how targeted infrastructure investments can create immediate and lasting benefits. Our New Rainwater Collection System Water access remains a significant challenge for many schools throughout Uganda. Without reliable water sources, maintaining sanitation facilities, supporting handwashing programs, and providing safe learning environments becomes increasingly difficult. Our most recent rainwater collection initiative was designed to address these challenges through sustainable water harvesting. Benefits of rainwater collection include: Improved water availability Enhanced sanitation support Reduced dependence on expensive water delivery Better environmental sustainability Increased resilience during dry periods By capturing and storing rainwater, schools can better support students while reducing operational costs. Sustainable projects like these provide long-term benefits long after construction is completed. What Most People Never See About Running a Nonprofit Many people see photos of completed projects but rarely understand the work required behind the scenes. Running an international nonprofit requires extensive planning, oversight, and compliance. Every project involves: Fundraising Donor communication Financial reporting Government compliance Project management Community engagement Documentation Risk management Volunteer coordination International partnerships For every hour spent on a construction site, many additional hours are spent preparing budgets, filing reports, reviewing regulations, communicating with donors, and ensuring accountability. Compliance in the United States As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Speakers for Africa must comply with federal and state regulations. This includes: Annual IRS reporting Financial recordkeeping Board governance requirements Donor receipt documentation Charitable compliance obligations Organizational transparency Maintaining compliance protects donors, strengthens accountability, and ensures that contributions are used responsibly. Compliance in Uganda Operating responsibly in Uganda requires equally important compliance measures. International nonprofit activities involve: Local partnerships Government coordination Regulatory approvals Community engagement Project oversight Financial accountability Successful projects depend on strong relationships with local leaders, educators, government representatives, and community members. Long-term development work is only possible when trust exists between all stakeholders. The Human Side of the Work The most rewarding moments rarely appear in financial reports or project plans. They happen when: Students receive their first school meal of the day. A classroom receives new desks. Girls gain access to hygiene resources. Athletes put on new uniforms. Communities celebrate the completion of a sanitation project. Children dance because they know their future just became a little brighter. Those moments remind us why the difficult work matters. Looking Ahead While we are proud of what has been accomplished, there is still much work to do. Poor access to proper facilities contributes to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, which affects children and vulnerable populations. Projects in Uganda 50 Desks Constructed at the Uganda Youth Aid Nursery and Primary school, Kampala, Uganda In March 2025, Speakers for Africa expanded its classroom desk initiative by constructing 50 high-capacity desks—beginning with an initial 22 and completing an additional 28. Each desk seats five students, meaning 250 children were lifted off the floor and given a proper place to learn. The floor is no place to learn; a desk restores dignity, focus, and the basic conditions every child deserves in a classroom. Read More Construct 4-stance pit latrine, Rwakobo Primary School, Western Uganda In March 2025, Speakers for Africa completed the construction of a four-stance pit latrine at Rwakobo Primary School, located just inside Lake Mburo National Park. The new facility replaced collapsing, unsafe pits and ended the practice of children using nearby bushes. With proper toilets, a boys’ urinal, and a girls’ private area, students now have a clean, safe, and dignified place to go—an immediate transformation in daily school life. Read More Boys and Girls Sports Since 2024, Speakers for Africa has established boys’ and girls’ soccer teams at Uganda Youth Aid School in Kampala and boys’ and girls’ teams at Rwakobo Primary School near Lake Mburo National Park (launched March 2025). In addition, we introduced a girls’ soccer team at Uganda Youth Aid School in 2024 and a girls’ volleyball team in Rwakobo in 2025. These programs provide uniforms, equipment, coaching, and structured practice, giving students safe recreational outlets, boosting confidence, and building school pride. Read More Uganda School Kitchen Renovation In March 2025, Speakers for Africa began repairs on the school kitchen at Uganda Youth Aid School, transforming a smoke-filled, unsafe cooking area into a functional space where daily meals can be prepared more efficiently and hygienically. These improvements immediately enhanced food preparation, reduced health hazards, and ensured students receive meals in a cleaner, safer environment. Read More
